SHADOWS OF YESTERDAY is UPFI Film Center's Queer Pride Feature

The Great UP Midyear: June and July 2015 Screenings at UPFI Film Center

Midyear in the country’s premier state university promises to be a great time to go to the movies with the UP FIlm Institute’s selection of screenings at the UPFI Film Center in UPDiliman.

The National Independence Month of June is mainly celebrated with collected features – old and new –by Kidlat Tahimik and will serve as a great occasion as well to honor the memory of National Artist Ishmael Bernal with the spotlight on the legacy of one of his classics now digitally restored and re-mastered.

Cinema from the country’s ranks of emergent independent filmmakers grabs the limelight with first-time director features, namely, Ida Anita del Mundo’s K’na the Dreamweaver and Bagane Fiola’s Sonata Maria. K’na the Dreamweaver is bound for notable international women’s filmfests such as Female Eye and Aichi. Sonata Maria garnered the coveted Best First Feature honors from the Film Desk of the Young Critics Circle.

One more first-time director’s feature prominently figures in the line-up, Rosswill Hilario’s Alimuom ng Kahapon, to herald Queer Pride festivities for the university community. Hilario’s directing debut has secured official selection at the forthcoming international LGBT film festival in Durban.

Restored classics that ABS-CBN Film Restoration will unveil with their respective premieres are Mel Chionglo’s Nagsimula sa Puso starring Hilda Koronel and Richard Gomez and Olivia Lamasan’s Sana Maulit Muli – a Lea Salonga-Aga Muhlach team-up.

Militant filmmaking makes its presence strongly felt with a documentary features special top-billed by EJ Mijares’ Shapes of Crimson; JL Burgos’ Portraits of Mosquito Press and Ilang-Ilang Quijano’s Daughters of Cordillera.

An encore is slated for a twinbill of classics with Action King Fernando Poe Jr. presented for the fine artistry and the representations of resistance against social ills that the legendary figure of Philippine cinema personifies.

Complementing the selections are international releases with the animated features The House of Magic and Quest for a Heart; a World-War II action adventure, Saints and Soldiers: Battle of the Tanks and The Canyons from maverick master Paul Schrader.

Culminating showcase for UPFI Film Center’s midyear season of screenings is the latest work from Charliebebs Gohetia for a late-night cinema engagement.
